Best known for his solid commitment to the home care cleaning company that bears his name, Jim Kirby was an inventor for the better part of his adult life. His goal in life was to reduce or eliminate day to day drudgery wherever it existed.

Over 200 patents and a bunch of products used today are a tribute to his success.

Jim Kirby decided, after seeing his father work way too hard for too little, that he would not spend his entire life working for a paycheck. So, he started his own little business making gadgets for a fee.

After watching his mothers cleaning efforts result in dust settling back on to the rugs, he got busy and developed his concept of a labor-reducing home care appliance. The very first product he developed in 1906 employed water for dirt separation.

He noticed the inconvenience of emptying the dirty water container, so he began pursuing better ideas. In 1907, Jim Kirby developed a Kirby vacuum cleaner that pushed dirty air into a cloth bag that filtered out the dirt.
